Parishioners of St. Mary’s, St. Lawrence, St. Teresa –
We are starting a new ministry at our parishes called L.O.C.K. – We Love Our College Students – to support and encourage the faith of our college-aged young adults away from home at college or in the military during the 2021-2022 school year. Each month we will be sending them a mailing or care package to let them know we are thinking about them and praying for them.
To make this awesome ministry happen, we need adults from each of the parishes to help supply the mailings for the months of October to April; Fr Meyer and Fr Mahan will take care of September.
The mailings can be whatever you want – snacks, candy, book mark, prayer card, magnet, gift card, poem, etc….be creative! The sender will get mailing labels from the parish office, fill the care packages with whatever items you want, take to the post office to be weighed and postage added, and then drop into the mail. We are happy to get receipts from you to reimburse; please know that we cannot reimburse sales tax.
If you personally or if a ministry within the parish would like to take on a month, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
A few words about the L.O.C.K. ministry from Fr. Meyer who has offered this at All Saints in the past:
Why do you have L.O.C.K.? This program stands for “Love Our College Kids.” It is a monthly mailing that goes out to anyone who turns in an address for a young adult who is away studying or in the military. The program is coordinated through the parish office with parish adult volunteers offering to put together some sort of gift, mailing, letter, devotional or prayer card for the recipient. This is sent to our college-age young adults every month while school is in session. Our young people will comment continuously about how this makes them feel engaged and remembered. As the pastor, I always do something for the young people in the month of September. I really just want to kick off the program with something from myself. I normally send a letter letting them know they’ll be receiving things every month from the parish, reminding them that we pray for them and consider them a part of who we are. I mention our purpose as a parish and also encourage them to live their faith while away from home. I then have some sort of devotional item that I give to them, whether it be a prayer card or something along those lines. This is a tremendous ministry, and we are blessed to have it.
